Design & Build Quality Thanks to Apple giving the Air a major redesign in recent years, it’s quite easy to tell these two devices apart just by looking at them. The 9th gen iPad 2021 retains the classic layout that features bezels around the display, and the lower one accommodating the Home button with Touch ID the 10th generation iPad has now joined the no-Home button club, so the 9th gen model is now the only iPad with a Home button. You won’t find a Home button on the iPad Air 2022, but that doesn’t mean it has Face ID – instead a fingerprint sensor has been cleverly included in the power button on the top edge. Because there is no Face ID there is no requisite notch, leaving the Air with an uninterrupted display. Both iPads come with a single main camera on the rear, plus another on the front, although the iPad Air’s are both better more on that below. The iPad 2021 is something of a rarity as it still offers a headphone jack and a Lightning connector – in fact it’s the last of the current generation to come with Lightning, as the iPad Air 2022 and all other iPad models have now moved onto USB-C. You get stereo speakers on the bottom edge of the iPad 2021, while its more expensive sibling is blessed with the same, but on both ends. The Air also has a smart connector that supports the Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard Folio, but the iPad 2021 has a connector for the Smart Keyboard, meaning you can still turn it into a makeshift laptop if you desire. Both support the Apple Pencil, 1st generation in the case of the iPad 2021 and 2nd generation for the iPad Air 2022. They differ a little in size and weight, as you can see from these dimensions iPad Air 2022 x x 461giPad 2021 x x 487g The iPad 2021 is available in two colors – Silver or Space Grey – but Apple broke out it’s paints for the iPad Air 2022 which you can buy in one of five mainly pastel colors. The iPad 10th gen also comes in a selection of colors. Features and specifications While these are both iPads and can do most iPad things, when it comes to components there some significant differences that you should know about. Display As you’ll have already noticed above, the iPad Air comes with a larger display compared to the panel on the 9th gen iPad the 10th gen model has a display. The Air’s offering is also fully laminated, meaning there is no air-gap between the glass panel and the digitiser underneath, so you feel like you’re touching the actual pixels. This isn’t a dealbreaker for anyone wanting the iPad 2021 though, as unless you use them side-by-side or have a fully laminated display in your current iPad, you may not even notice the difference. Both offer the same 2,360 x 1,640 resolution, with 264ppi, 500 nits of brightness and True Tone technology. So, they are very similar of what they present to the eye. The iPad Air 2022 does have an anti-reflective coating and has a higher range of colours, but again these are quite marginal gains, especially when you consider the price difference. Processor and storage Where the iPad Air 2022 has a major advantage is with its processing power. Apple recently upgraded the Air to incorporate the M1 processor, which is the same one that powers the iPad Pros and some Macs. This is a serious piece of silicon and arguably too powerful for what most people do with an iPad. But, if you want to get into digital art, play graphically intensive games or just have a really powerful device that should last for years, then the Air certainly makes a compelling argument for itself. The iPad 2021 is hardly a stumbling fool of a machine though, with the A13 Bionic chip at its heart more than capable of keeping up with the typical demands users place on an iPad. After all, this was the processor that powered the iPhone 11 Pro Max, so it has plenty of poke. No, it won’t smoke the M1, but if you just want to stream Netflix, write some documents, video call your family or play less-intensive games, you won’t have any problems doing that on the iPad 2021. Storage options are the same on both devices, with the most affordable model coming with 64GB which feels a little tight in the modern age, or for an increase in price you can move up to a far more spacious 256GB. Quick tip If you intend to use the cameras on the Air to their full extent, 64GB will run out very fast unless you also invest in iCloud storage for your photos. Cameras While we’re not the biggest fans of using an iPad as a camera, you can certainly record some decent results with either model. The iPad 2021 comes with an 8MP, F/ Wide camera on the rear, which can employ HDR for photos and capture video up to 1080p at 30fps. It’s a bit better on the Air, which has a 12MP, f/ Wide camera that has Smart HDR 3 and can go all the way up to 4K at 60fps. The front cameras are a lot closer in spec, as they both feature a 12MP, f/ Ultra Wide unit that can record video up to 1080p at 60fps. Centre Stage is another shared feature, with the clever software ensuring that you remain in the middle of any video calls even if you’re moving around. If you just want an iPad to video call the family and look good doing it, there’s nothing really to separate the two devices. Connectivity The specs lean more in favour of the Air when it comes to getting online. Wi-Fi 6 is order of the day, whereas the iPad 2021 remains back on Wi-Fi 5. Now, here’s something to know. Unless you’ve upgraded your home router to a Wi-Fi 6 compatible one, then there will be little difference in speed. Just bear that in mind. Bluetooth is better on the Air, with its connection proving a little stronger than the of the iPad. Either will connect to speakers and headphones though. If you choose a cellular version of the Air you’ll be able to access 5G networks providing your SIM and network plan supports it, while the humble iPad will continue to use 4G networks instead. In that case, you could still save by choosing the 256GB WiFi iPad 9th gen $459/£519 rather than the 64GB iPad Air $599/£669. If the extra storage is worth more to you than the faster processor and better rear camera then it makes sense to stick with the standard iPad. Of course as of September 2022 there is another iPad to consider – the 10th generation iPad. This model does close the gap between the iPad Air and 9th generation iPad, but aside from the design changes there isn’t a lot else that is different to the 9th generation iPad we are considering here. It’s very fast, thanks to the M1 processor, looks great and has plenty of future-proofing built in. Of course, this all comes at a price and in recent years that has gone up quite a bit. We usually recommend against 64GB iPads, as it seems more likely to struggle with space if you intend to use it for a while. With that in mind, the Air really starts at $749/£849 was £719 for the 256GB version, which makes it an expensive device. The iPad 9th gen, on the other hand, costs $479/£549 was £459 for the 256GB version, and offers plenty of performance and features, including support for the less expensive version of the Apple Pencil. If you don’t need the extra power of the Air and don’t mind having a Home button on the front – you may even prefer it – we think it’s still one of the best bargains in the Apple catalogue.

And as it turns out, those are the only two models still available from Apple. Besides the substantial weight difference iPad Air is about a third-of-a-pound lighter than iPad 2, there were significant improvements across the board including display resolution, processing speed, RAM, graphics power, still/video camera resolution, and cellular carrier options. For one, Apple has kept the same Retina display with resolution of 2048×1536 and 264 pixels-per-inch. The GHz dual-core CPU used in the 4th-Generation iPad remains in the iPad Air, although it uses the “Cyclone” variant rather than the “Swift” variant used previously. RAM has stayed the same at 1024MB, although the latest LPDDR3 chip improves upon the LPDDR2 used in the last two iPad models. Apple just unveiled the iPad Air 2. Its predecessor, the iPad Air $ at eBayOpens in a new window , scored a near-perfect stars and an Editors' Choice award when lead analyst Sascha Segan reviewed it last year. The iPad Air 2 ups the ante in just about every way, but is it enough to command $100 more than the iPad Air, which just saw a $100 price drop? We compare specs to help you decide. Perhaps the most striking difference between the two tablets is physical. Whereas the iPad Air presented an entirely new look for the large-screen tablet, the iPad Air 2 takes the same general design, but makes it even thinner. The iPad Air 2 is a surprising 18 percent thinner than the iPad Air, which makes it just inches thick and less than a pound. As Apple points out, that's thinner than the width of a standard No. 2 pencil. In other words, if you're looking for a supremely portable big-screen tablet, the iPad Air 2 is an even better bet than the original. The iPad Air 2 also features Touch ID, which Apple first introduced on the iPhone 5s at AmazonOpens in a new window . Essentially, Touch ID is a fingerprint sensor that makes it possible to unlock your device and make secure purchases with a single tap of your finger. It's a feature I use every day on my iPhone, but I'm not sure it'll prove quite as useful for a tablet. After all, you probably don't unlock your tablet nearly as many times per day as your phone. It's also not the sort of form factor that you can just pick up and automatically unlock with one hand. Instead, you'll likely have to cradle the tablet in one hand, while using your other hand to activate Touch ID. It's still likely to make it easier to unlock the tablet and make payments, but I'm not sure if this alone makes it a worthy upgrade. Display size and resolution remain the same that is, a Retina display with 2,048-by-1,536-pixel resolution, which works out to 264 pixels per inch. But a change comes in the form of a new anti-reflective coating, which potentially solves one of the biggest problems we had with the iPad Air. Apple claims this coating reduces glare by over 56 percent compared with its predecessor. We'll have to take it for a spin in various lighting conditions to see how well this works, but it could be a big reason to opt for the iPad Air 2. On the inside, the iPad Air is seeing a major boost as well. Apple usually gives its tablets the same chip as its latest phones, which in this case would mean the A8 in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus $ at VerizonOpens in a new window . But the company has switched things up this time around, using a newly designed A8X chip for the iPad Air 2. Apple claims the 64-bit chip delivers 40 percent faster CPU performance than last year's A7, along with more than double the graphics performance. It's also rated for up to 10 hours of battery life, which is one of the most important metrics to take into consideration when evaluating a tablet. Again, we'll have to get the iPad Air 2 in PC Labs for some in-depth benchmark testing, but so far it sounds promising. The iPad Air 2 is also getting a new 8-megapixel iSight camera, which is a welcome upgrade to the 5-megapixel sensor on the Air. Apple claims that this is its best iPad camera yet, and showed some pretty impressive demos at its keynote. But perhaps just as exciting as an increase in image quality is a whole slew of new features, including burst, panorama, slo-mo, and timer modes, as well as time-lapse videos. These features help bring it more in line with the iPhone, and could be worth it if you use your tablet to take a lot of photos which still seems strange to me, but is a trend I'm seeing more and more. The front-facing camera features the same resolution, but has an improved sensor and larger pixels for better low-light performance, so you can start snapping more selfies in the dark. Less exciting but no less important, wireless connections on the iPad Air 2 have received a significant upgrade. Wi-Fi is twice as fast as before, with with WiMo capable of delivering speeds up to 866Mbps. LTE support on the cellular model has improved with 20 bands, offering users up to 150Mbps. And last but not least well actually, yeah, least, the iPad Air 2 comes in a new gold color option. So if you need your tech to match your outfits, color coordination just got a bit easier. You can pre-order the iPad Air 2 starting Friday for $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi version, or you can pick up the original iPad Air right now for $399. When I first started writing this, I was prepared to tell you to just save $100 and pick up the original iPad Air, because who needs Touch ID on a tablet anyway? But now that I look at all of the improvements, it's clear that the iPad Air 2 may not be a radical redesign, but it's more than just an incremental upgrade. Of course, we'll have to put the tablet through its paces for a full review before reaching a final verdict, but judging by what's on paper, it seems worth it to shell out the extra $100 for the iPad Air 2. But with the competition catching up fast and phablets offering big-screened fun without the need for equally big pockets the tablet market is more competitive than Apple still pushing tablet tech forwards, or is the iPad Air 2 a collection of minor improvements? There's a new colour option the same champagne gold that the iPhone comes in and it's 18% thinner at just thick, but you're not going to mistake it for any other device. One important detail is new, though, and that's the Touch ID sensor that also acts as the home button. More about that in a most important change in the iPad Air 2 is the way the screen is made. By eradicating the air gaps between different layers Apple has managed to make the display significantly thinner, and it has the pleasant side-effect of making the pixels appear closer to the surface of the screen much rumoured iPad Pro didn't make an appearance this time, so the iPad Air 2 remains the biggest tablet Apple currently sells.
